Akukho Loyiko (No Fear!)

Akukho loyiko! (No fear!) is a Xhosa story about a girl in her tweens, set in a rural village. One late afternoon, after spending time with her friends at the river, she is left alone and has to find her way home. In doing so, she has to face several challenges, such as a sneaky crocodile and a mean, chauvinist dog. Play the game and help Nonzwakazi to reach home by facing her challenges with the help of a firefly and the magic that her mum passed on to her. The player furthermore has the opportunity to switch between Xhosa and English dialogue, written and audio.

Akukho loyiko! is ultimately a gamified coming of age story about a girl who has to face the challenges associated with setting one’s own boundaries. It is a layered Xhosa narrative that encourages the young to make the wisdom of the elders their own.
